Undoubtedly a species at the top of many birder’s lists. We are very lucky with the population we get right here in Kloof, particularly in our natural forest areas.
The Narina Trogon feeds mainly on invertebrates, such as caterpillars, spiders, mantids, rarely feeding on small reptiles. Narina Trogons are able, when threatened, to secrete an extremely foul-smelling liquid from the preen gland at the base of the tail. This is one of the few bird species where, in my opinion, the female is just as pretty (if not more so) than the male. He certainly has a striking beauty, but she is far more delicate and refined.
When asked to explain the difference to a friend, the thought came to mind that, while he’s dressed for a Christmas party, she’s definitely dressed for high tea!
