The common genet is a reasonably small mammal that belongs to the civet family. There are almost 30 subspecies of genets that can be found in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. These usually secretive, nocturnal creatures are largely solitary. Genets have retractable claws adapted to climbing and catching prey. Genets are predominately carnivorous, with a diet based on small mammals, birds, lizards, and insects. They will occasionally eat fruit too. On a moonlit night, I’ve seen one sampling a banana that I put out for the birds in my garden. The common genet has a mane that runs from its shoulders to its tail, this is erected when threatened to make it appear larger. The common genet’s lifespan is uncertain in the wild but they have been known to live up to 20 years in captivity.
