The Scrub Hare is the more common of the two subspecies of hares found in Southern Africa. Unlike rabbits, hares do not live in burrows, choosing instead to live in hollows pressed out by their bodies under bushes. Scrub hares are generally nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day if the weather is cool and overcast. I photographed this particular subject in the Kruger National Park.
Scrub hares are herbivorous, eating grass, roots, and tubers, which are digested by a hindgut fermentation system meaning all their food is digested in a large central stomach and only exposed to cellulose-decaying micro bacteria late in the digestive process. This means that digestion is quick but not as effective as it could be. For this reason, hares practice coprophagia (the consuming of dung) to maximize the undigested nutrients still in their dung- Clever!!
Scrub hares have an average lifespan of 1-5 years in the wild.
