Rock Hyrax (Dassie) – Procavia capensis

SKU: N/A Category:

Commonly known as “Dassies”, Rock hyraxes are able to climb on steep rock surfaces because of physical adaptations on their feet. The feet are specially padded and secrete moisture, creating a vacuum-like suction to solid surfaces, thus aiding in their climbing ability and assisting with grip. Rock hyraxes live in groups ranging from 2 to 26 individuals. A dominant male watches over the colony carefully to ensure the safety of the group. They have little control of their body temperature and cannot exist without shelter from cold and heat. Instead, they use the environment to regulate their temperature. Amazingly enough, their closest genetic relative is the elephant. The similarities are most evident in the dental structure, and in fact, dassies actually have tusks developed from incisors, rather than canines. Dassies have at least 21 different vocalizations. Male dassies are able to”sing” complex songs, which can last for several minutes and serve a territorial purpose, much like bird song. Dassies are diurnal and have a lifespan 9-14 years.
