Pearl-spotted Owlets are one of Southern Africa’s smallest owls. They are in fact ‘earless’ owls. Their name comes from the pearl-like white spots above the shoulders of this owl. Unlike most owls, it hunts in the day as well as the night. The pearl-spotted owlet uses startle displays ( a form of bluffing behaviour ) to ward off its enemies. It has two eye-spots on the back of its head, that mimic real eyes, and a predator would be hard pressed to know for sure which way the owlet is really looking. This technique is used to dissuade attackers, as predators generally won’t pursue prey from the front, as they then lose the element of surprise that is critical for effective hunting.

Each print is made using a fine art printer on premium cotton rag paper. The result is a print that is remarkably alike to the original painting. The paper and ink used are both archival which means the print won’t fade over time.

The print size is A4 (297 x 420mm).
