Rooted in the Wild

For Robyn Ansell, inspiration has never come from a studio alone. It has come from years spent observing the natural world-discovering the quiet details, individual personalities and fleeting moments that so often go unnoticed. Those moments continue to shape the way she sees the world and remain at the heart of every painting she creates.

After learning the foundations of oil painting under the guidance of a local artist, Robyn developed her own artistic voice through years of independent practice, observation and experimentation. Her experience as a qualified field guide, together with countless hours spent in the African bush, continues to influence a style that balances realism with expressive texture across both oils and acrylics.

Her deep-rooted passion for birds and meticulous attention to detail have led to opportunities to illustrate for two of Southern Africa's most respected names in ornithological publishing. She first had the privilege of contributing artwork to Newman's Birds, continuing the remarkable legacy of Kenneth Newman, before being commissioned to create the original illustrations for The Parasitic Birds of Southern Africa, an upcoming publication in the Roberts Bird Guide series.

Whether collaborating on conservation initiatives, creating curated collections, illustrating for publication or painting simply for the joy of it, Robyn considers it a genuine privilege to spend her days doing work she loves. Her hope is that each piece invites others to pause, look a little closer, and discover the beauty, wonder and connection to the natural world that inspires her own work.
