Pretty Lady

900 mm x 600 mm • Oil on Linen

It’s no secret that I LOVE painting detail. Recreating the textures, the intricacies that lurk beyond the obvious. When I came across this beautiful photo, after obtaining permission to paint it, I was immediately excited to recreate the bark of the tree (yes, that’s correct). As I studied the image I developed the idea to play around with my brushstrokes. Slowly fading out detail towards the edges of the canvas. Of course the leopard’s eyes are the main focus here. I wanted to highlight that in every way. This piece in particular has been just the right mix of fun and adventure, in a creative sense. Creativity in the true sense of the word. This particular leopard is also just so darn pretty!! I used my creative licence to add a few little scratches to her nose, as a reminder that there’s blazing strength, in lethal quantity, lurking beneath that feminine charm… but also because scratches are just fun to paint!
