Original image by Chris martin Wildlife photography. This image is simplistic yet striking. Each member of the kingfisher family is incredibly remarkable in their own way. Very little is needed to accompany these birds in a painting, I have been drawing and painting malachite kingfishers for as long as I can remember, using them as subjects on family birthday cards when I was a little girl thus the textures and colour placements are very familiar to me. This was my first attempt at painting malachite using oils as a medium and it was really enjoyable being able to build up the comparably rich colour tones and fine feather detail that oils allow. I love that the background of this work is simplistic; the blurred suggestion of reeds creates an interesting dynamic.
